Equine Assisted Learning

Equine Assisted Learning

Equine-Assisted Learning at Harmony IN Horses is a trauma-informed, evidence-based service designed to support healing for youth who have experienced abuse, neglect, instability, and disrupted relationships. Many participants are involved with the foster care system or are navigating the long-term effects of early trauma.

Volunteer

With horses as our partners, participants engage in intentional, ground-based activities that emphasize safety, consent, and connection. Horses are highly sensitive to human emotion and nervous system states, responding honestly and without judgment. This allows participants to practice emotional regulation, clear communication, boundary setting, and trust in real time—often without the pressure of verbal processing.

Our work is founded in Polyvagal Theory, which helps explain how trauma impacts the nervous system and why emotional regulation can feel difficult after chronic stress. Harmony IN Horses brings together two highly effective and transformative elements to help participants build this essential skill.

Participants first learn to recognize what is happening in their body, and why. Using a Polyvagal lens, they begin to understand signals of safety, stress, and overwhelm, building awareness of their own nervous system responses. That understanding is then put into practice with horses. Horses are exceptional teachers of embodied learning, offering honest, real-time feedback that supports grounding, calm presence, and connection—beyond words alone.

Sessions are strengths-based and paced to meet each participant where they are. Rather than focusing on behavior correction, Equine-Assisted Learning at Harmony IN Horses supports regulation, self-awareness, and relational skills that form the foundation for long-term healing and resilience.

Most sessions are scheduled once per week and last one hour. Each session follows a consistent, trauma-responsive structure that supports predictability, safety, and meaningful connection.
